Welcome Back!
I was overjoyed to see my wonderful grade one students today! This month is a busy one and there are lots of exciting days ahead so be sure to read the newsletter and calendar that was sent home today!
March News!

“March 2nd is Dr. Seuss’s birthday—what better way to celebrate than to read? Did you know Dr. Seuss would be 114 this year? While he is no longer with us, his legacy lives on in the pages of his books. He has forever changed the way children’s books were written and continues to inspire generations.”

In our classroom we self correct our work the following way:
5 Star Writing Rules:
1) Use a capital letter to start a sentence.
2) Use punctuation at the end of the sentence.
3) Finger space.
4) Use neat handwriting.
5) Check to see if the sentence makes sense.
Please support your child with these writing rules as they work on their
Sails Home Reading.

We are learning how to be a “buddy” and not a “bully.” Please ask your child to share what he/she has been learning for this topic.

I was so impressed by all of the hard work and creativity that went into the 100th Day Posters! Great job, Superstars!

February 12, 2018

Dear Parents,

This letter is regarding a few housekeeping items:

Homework for this week:
Students will only be attending school this week from Monday to Wednesday. As you are aware, there is no school on Thursday, Friday and Monday. As such, students will be taking home books to read and a worksheet each day. This means that the Sails Home Reading Program will continue after the long weekend. On Wednesday, students will be asked to prepare a 100th Day Poster over the long weekend. A letter about our 100th Day Celebration is attached to this note.

Winter Olympics – February 13, 2018:
As noted in the Classroom Newsletter that was sent home at the beginning of the month, students will be participating in winter games during their DPA period tomorrow (as you know, we changed the date due to weather conditions).  Since these are winter games, it is important that our students are dressed for the weather. Please make sure your child has all the winter attire (boots, snowpants, winter jacket, scarf or earmuffs, hat and mittens).

100th Day Celebration – February 14, 2018:
Please see the attached letter regarding this day.

Reading, Give It A Shot!
We launched our Literacy Committee Program last year. Since then, we have been trying to reach out to the Calgary Flames Players to see if they would come and speak/read at our school.
This year, we tried again. They have sent us a Reading Tracking Sheet and Calgary Flames player cards!! We will be distributing these soon! The Flames will most likely not visit since we are not in partnership with them but we still thought we could send it out to classes to encourage them to read and to inspire them to continue to grow and develop their reading skills.

This is how the program works:
The hockey cards are distributed to all schools in the new year, and it is at the discretion of the teacher how long they would like the program to run. Schools that have 100% of students participating in Reading…Give It A Shot! are eligible to receive recognition, thanks to the generous support of the Calgary Flames Foundation.

For our classroom, students will receive hockey player cards if they receive 14 marks or higher on their Sails Home Reading work (which is out of 16 marks). We hope that they enjoy the cards just as much as we did preparing them for all of the classes!

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Ms. Khandani

Dear Parents,

I hope that you and your families are staying safe and warm during the weather conditions that we have been having. Our school was open today and our routines are still the same. Please check our agenda notes section for any homework information. Wishing you all a warm winter wonderland day!
Dear Parents,

Today your child has started a new home reading program (SAILS).This is a wonderful homework program as it helps your child to continue to develop his/her reading and writing skills. I have sent home a letter with examples on how to work with the new homework program.

Students also completed a Sails Home Reading worksheet in class to better prepare themselves for this new home reading program.

I strongly encourage you to read the letter that I have sent home. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Warmest Regards,

Ms. Khandani

Good Evening Parents,

I am so excited to begin the New Year with our students tomorrow! I hope that everyone has had the opportunity to rest and enjoy family time together.

Tomorrow, we will be going to the Library and we will be signing out new books.

Below are a few notes that I have written in our January Newsletter (which will be going home tomorrow).

Notes from the teacher:
√ I am so proud of all the hard work that I have seen on the learning websites during the break. Students will be receiving certificates next week for all of their efforts.
√ Winter is here! Please send your child to school with the appropriate winter attire (this includes: winter boots, snow pants, earmuffs, mittens, a scarf and a winter jacket). Please also send a box of Kleenex.
√ We will be beginning a new home reading program this month. A letter regarding this program will be sent home shortly.
√ This month, we will also be working together with an Artist In Residency Program. This is a unique enrichment opportunity for our students to experience arts based programming with a storyteller and harpist, Jeff Stockton.

Dear Parents,

I have placed a checklist on each child’s Book Buddy Bag. This checklist is attached to a key ring. Please review the checklist with your child each morning, to ensure that he/she is ready for school. I have also provided a dry erase marker that he/she can use to check off the boxes on the checklist. To erase, students may use a wet paper towel or Kleenex.

Hope this helps with school readiness! Note: Students also use one at school for the end of the day.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Assembly Feedback:

Dear Parents,

Our students performed well at assembly today.
Unfortunately, our WiFi connection was not working well and the song did stop twice over the gym speakers and iPad. Nevertheless, our students persevered. They continued to sing and keep up with the song. I am so proud of them! They practiced a life skill today and shined like superstars!

Thinking of my students,

Ms. Khandani
Our Conscience Assembly is just two weeks away!

Please make sure you have set aside some time to come and watch your child perform! The assembly, as written in our class calendar, is on November 1st at 9:00 am.

Please practice this song with your child.
Your child should already know the song (as we’ve been practicing).
If you would like to use the music to help sing along, please message me.

Conscience Song:

(To the tune of “I’m gonna be a mighty king!”)
Lyrics created by Ms. Khandani
SPECIAL THANKS to Ms. Mawji for creating the tune ☺

8 Counts in to the song.

I’m gonna be a Conscience King
so Almadina CARES!

Well I’ve never seen a group of friends,
quite so well prepared.

We’re gonna be the main event,
like no King was before!

We’re brushing up on making choices,
Working on our ROAR!

Oh, I just can’t wait to be King!

Conscience says do this.
Conscience says be there.
Conscience says stop that.
Conscience says see here.

Free to do our part all day,
free to do it the right way!

8 counts again...

I’m gonna be a Conscience King
so Almadina CARES!

Well I’ve never seen a group of friends,
quite so well prepared.

We’re gonna be the main event,
like no King was before!

We’re brushing up on making choices,
Working on our ROAR!

Oh, I just can’t wait to be King!

Conscience says do this.
Conscience says be there.
Conscience says stop that.
Conscience says see here.

Free to do our part all day,
free to do it the right way!

I deeply regret to inform you that I am not feeling well and unfortunately will not be at the Meet the Teacher Event tonight.

I was looking forward to this night, however, I am grateful that I have had the opportunity to meet many of you during the Testing Days.

Meet the Teacher:
During this event, parents come to visit the classroom and to speak with the Teacher. At this event, I hand out Welcome Packages that provide more information about our classroom and school. I will send that package to the Substitute Teacher and to our Educational Assistant and will have these Teachers place it inside your child’s Book Buddy Bags.

Dear Parents,
I would like to welcome you to the new school year at Mountain View Elementary. My name is Ms. Khandani and I will be your child’s first grade teacher this year. This is my sixth year at Almadina and I look forward to the adventures that lie ahead with my new group of students.

What to Expect:

I believe in parent-teacher communication as an important tool in helping with your child’s learning and throughout the year I will be communicating with you through agenda notes, phone calls, e-mail, newsletters, calendars, interim report cards and parent teacher conferences. I would encourage you to contact me by phone/e-mail preferably before/after instructional times for questions or concerns you may have.

If there are any changes in your child’s home time routine (changes in bus routes or pickups) you must send me a written  note or notify our main office in order to prevent any miscommunication or confusion. If you are picking up your child before the dismissal time, remember to fill out the sign out sheet at the main office.
